Attempting to make your next big move even easier? Need a few tips on how to minimise the stress of moving? Well, you're human, so moving is going to stress you out. Moving a single room is relatively simple, but moving all your worldly possessions into a new abode is a mammoth task, and more often that not, you'll find you need an extra hand to help out. There is no shame in that!
Use your friends; that's what they're there for! Well, not exactly, but you should call on your friends in your hour of need. It can be as simple as asking them to help you move furniture or asking to borrow one of their utes. Use your bonds of friendship and play on their heartstrings, because no one should have to move alone!
Start small; the devil is in the details. If you're not sure where to start, make a list of everything that you can think of. Make a list of everything that needs doing, and then plan the order in which you're going to do them. Lists are your best friends when you're moving. They'll anchor you and let you know exactly what needs doing and when. Take a pre-emptive stand against chaos and make lists (not too many though, we don't want them to be counter productive and cancel out their original purpose). Making lists of the materials you'll need will also save you from running around on the day of the move. Try to gauge how many boxes you'll need ahead of time. If not, more is better in this case. Local businesses, and retailers especially, usually have a surplus of cardboard boxes that they don't want or need, so if you ask nicely they may acquiesce and give you a few.
If you want to do it the proper way (no cutting corners and cutting expenses), you'll be better off buying proper packing boxes. Normal boxes are usually great (and I've used them as well), but normal boxes also have a tendency to break open and spill their contents onto the floor without a moment's warning. Proper packing boxes are more reinforced and intended to handle the knocks that come with moving. If you want it done right from the start, I'd suggest investing in proper packing boxes. This is one area where it pays (pardon the pun) not to be a penny pincher.
I'm a chronic organiser; I need things to be properly organised or I don't feel relaxed or at ease. So let me say that the best advice I can give for likeminded people is that it feels much less chaotic and stressful if you pack everything up room by room. Packing things up room by room allows you to organise boxes more easily, label more easily, and unpack everything more quickly in their respective rooms when arriving at a new place. Plus, once you've completed packing up one room, you feel a little accomplished that at least once space is clear. It's something you can tick off one of those lists of yours. Bedroom, tick! Kitchen, tick! It feels better to organise everything room by room.
This list of things is not exhaustive, but hopefully it will help you out a little in preparation for your next move and at least encourage your peace of mind.
